Old School vs. New School

Have you ever had a moment when you were listening to the radio and heard a new song, but for some reason it still sounds familiar??? Then you realize that it is from an older song, typically something that is now considered old school.
I have experience this feeling countless times. New age artist are constantly looking forefathers of music for inspiration, but my question is do they take it to far is by stealing their beats. I always thought of music as a form of free expression, but when you take someone Else's lyrics or beats then the cause just becomes lost. You don't even understand the purpose of the song anymore.
Since I came to this conclusion I also think that they should have to pay the originator of the beat in order to use their music for their songs.

So my question for you is do you think it is right for new age artists to take the beats from their forefathers before them or should they create their own sound???

  1. I think it is wrong to take them and I think they should deffinitly make their own beats and create their own sound. If they have to take someone elses work, then they must not be good enough to think of their own.

  2. I don't think it's really wrong to take someone else's beat or lyrics as long as it's credited to the originator, or some of the profit goes to the originator. And just think, if today's artists, didn't remake songs(like Seether remaking "Careless Whisper" by George Michaels or Marilyn Manson remaking "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell) then a lot of kids today wouldn't even know about some of the great older songs. Like, everytime I listen to a song that is a remix or remake or whatever of an older song, i go look it up and listen to it to compare the two. just cuz its fun.

  3. Its not cool, and its not original. It makes them look cheap and not very smart.

  4. Only if they try to claim it as their own. If they're doing it to make a tribute to the band, or they make a remake,it's okay. It's just wrong if you take like a beat from a song and say you made it up.At least give some credit.

  5. I think that no matter what you are going to have people copying beats and strings and whether it is intentional or not it happens. I think that if you are getting insperation from someone else then why not re-use it but at least make it your own.
